During the course of last week we did practice a few times with our big boy so he can overcome the challenge of the 200m race. While the weather forecast was somehow mixed we did get support as also Max and Leo did opt for the race and thus we met before lunchtime on Saturday near the Stadionbad to register for the race, collect the starting numbers and goodie bags. Due to the massive run to late registration the start of the races for the more than 1600 kids - each age group had its own race actually - was delayed by some 20 minutes. At 1230 finally the time has come and Jakob & Leo were in the front row of the starting grid.

GOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

The two boys were so "hot" to race, that as soon as the barrier was lifted prior to the start of the race they wanted to take off and had to be called back by Markus. Once the race got underway the two friends ran hand-in-hand cheered by hundreds of spectators up and down the Prater Hauptallee and across the finishing line. Outside the finishing area they were welcomed not only by Julia, Kerstin & Markus but also Mimi, Bruno & Max (who at that time still waited for his race) as well as Stefan & Viki. Full of pride they wore their finisher's medals as well and enjoyed their big moment visibly. Jakob was enjoyed it so much, that he would have wanted to race once again, but instead we cheered big time for Max when his race was on and Max was stoically enjoying his race, running his p[ace and finishing bravely. the Sausages and drinks afterwards were not only well deserved but also tasted deliciously.
We did it!

Sunday morning then we took off to the races again as the stage was set for the Frauenlauf whichMoni and Mimi participated over the 5km and Viki, her mom and cousin (they came in 4th in the family team ranking!) over the 10km. With sunshine and good music it was a great day and great event - the more than 31000 women in the race had perfect conditions, lots of supporters and lots of fun. We had another day out and about and if jakob's large baloon would not have flown away a few minutes after we got it it would have been the perfect day. As a little consolation we did get a bundle of smaller baloons instead, but nothing aganst the big one. We got to take better care next time!
The old town of the historic city was turned into a medieval market place with traders, jugglers, musicians, hangmen, witches, knights and knaves. We have been looking out for a festival like that for a while and thus made our way Sunday morning towards the middle ages. The weather was perfect -it was sunny and dry - and to our surprise it did not take very long once we entered the "time machine" for Jakob to warm up to the exciting event. The old market place was already at 1000 pretty busy with people dressed in historic outfit as well as "tourists" like ourselves.

No presents from the knights

Kids hat many different opportunities to experience the middle ages - be it by minting their own coins, constructing a bow, dancing to the sounds of lutes and flutes or by watching knights fight. The lattter part was not only for Jakob the most exciting thing, but the tournament area was the most packed area of the festival at times. Hundreds of people watched 7 knights fight each other with the longsword over several rounds and they did not make any presents to each other but fought really hard. No wonder - the price was a decent handmade longsword. Following the first rounds we of the knight tournament when we we made our way back to the marketplace we bought wooden swords and shields for our little own Don Quijote Jakob and his Sancho Panza Julia. Lunch we had - very typical - without cutlery but we ate the chicken with our fingers and it was just delicious that way. Later on Jakob got his face painted as tiger before watching the final rounds of the tournament in the afternoon. Once the knights have crowned the winner in their tournament the kids took over the tournament court and "fought" with the newly bought swords.

Jakob watching very concentrated

It was not easy to convince our kids to leave the middle ages again and come back to the future, but once we were all sat in the car both Jakob and Julia were quite soon fast asleep. A sleep, that was badly needed as the day was exhausting. only one evidence was, that Julia did not wake up when we reached home but slept through until Monday morning.
While all of us were very keen to watch the race and cheer the runners, Jakob was always of the conviction, that he is running the marathon himself. Hence he was wearing his running outfit - shoes, pants and shirt - being not only nervous, but also full of energy for the race. When the elite runners - led by superstar Haile Gebrselassie - passed us at the Rotundenbruecke Jakob was watching with huge astonishment how fast man can run and quite a while later he was amazed by the sheer amount of people that were tackling the race - more than 40.000 runners in all disciplines in total! We lateron made our way (running ofcourse) towards the ringroad where Jakob would have loved to use the nutrition areas for himself and was very happy when he did get an (empty) Powerade cup in the end. Together with dad he them was running alongside the racers on the course all the ringroad towards Schwarzenbergplatz watching runners, waving at spectators and happy whenever he had a chance to crush a plastic cup on the road.

What a great training-track!

Our base for the remainder of the race was the Schwarzenbergplatz where we not only could watch and cheer runners around km 12 of their race but also at km 41, so just before reaching the finishing line. While Jakob did avoid the competition with the leaders of the men's race he did run alongside some of the following runners for 100/150 metres and he did (almost) keep pace with them - see the video as evidence. Spectators along the course were as amazed as mom and dad and applauded the little boy a lot. He obviously loved that, as he repeated the little sprint 4 times. Together with Stefan and Viki we then refuelled the batteries with meat at McDonald's. Maybe not the healthiest food, but closest to the track so we did not miss much. When Viki's brother-in-law had passed us on his last metres of his race we said farewell to the great spot and made our way home by bus. Both Jakob and Julia have been really tired and used the busride for a short rest.

I can run. I can bike.

Once we reached home Jakob must have found a second energy as he was demanding to go out again on his bike and use the opportunity of traffic-free roads to ride his bike. Kerstin decided to go out with him while Markus stayed at home and put Julia to bed for an afternoon nap. Half an hour later he received a picture showing Jakob on his bike in front of the State Opera, approximately 5km from home. He did really ride the bike on the race track all the way there, made his way together with Kerstin to the finishing area before meeting Stefan again at the Rathausplatz . From there our big-boy cycled to Schwedenplatz where he got a well deserved large ice. The ride home was then very casual and we are actually pretty amazed of the energy Jakob had all day long. Not only was he running a lot throughout the day, but it was also his first big bicycle tour! Chapeaux!
As we are rather "mainstream" and our children are in that age the Easter bunny has brought some mobility tools for both Julia and Jakob. The big boy got a micro scooter so he can be faster on his way to kindergarten while Julia got a new Puky trycicle (including a slide rod) as well as a red Big Bobby Car. The latter means, that she does not need to borrow Jakob's black Mercedes anymore.

Yesterday afternoon there was then a lot of action in our living room as we had two fire-men present who had all sorts of jobs to do. Both of them have been very busy driving around on their fire engines and had a lot of fund doing so. While they in the past were fighting for the vehicles thi was the first time they cooperated and played together. These are the moments when we know for sure that the presents we got were the right ones. Whether we think the same way, when they start racing each other and crashing into all our furniture, walls etc we cant say at the moment. Future will tell.
Pictures and videos (back) onlineVery often when not paying attention to things they go sour. Whether the fact that ther was hardly any/no maintenance of our blog for several months has led to bugs entering the system or whether it was pure coincidence can not be answered at this point. Fact is, that the bugs are cleared now, we could update the content a little bit, add a few new features and bring back to life some well known and appreciated features.

Ergo - you can finally take a look at the latest photo updates - now appearing on Google+ - as well as all other picture links that used to work in the past. We also added new Videos to the YouYube channel, whereas two of them can ONLY be watched by following the links in the "Video Links" section on the right hand side of the page. Enjoy!
Jakob was running through the first snow late October in grandma Heidi's backyard and today both in Hoerbranz as well as Vienna roofs and streets are covered in snow again. It's about time to end the winter though and let spring really begin. Easter markets appear more like christmas markets and Easter Eggs might be found on a white bed rather than on green grass. Jakob definitely is on spring mode already and has the last few days, before snowfall set in in Vorarlberg, trained big time his biking skills and has made significant leaps forward from autumn. He now easily cycles a couple of kilometers on his second hand holiday bike we bought for him together with uncle Werner and aunt Renate. As a consequence he drops dead to bed in the evening. Lately even with grandma Heidi and yesterday even at uncle Werner and aunt Renate's place! Its fair to say, that he has matured.

Enough of that white stuff!

Our little treasure Julia has quite exciting weeks behind her as well. On March 17th she had her big day at church when she was christened in the Verklaerungskirche am Tabor in Vienna and enjoyed a great day with the big family from the Burgenland as well as Vorarlberg. Unlike Jakob, who was christened 6 months younger we gave Julia the chance to decide herself a little bit as she actually could have walked out in case she did not like it. But apart from watching the priest a bit skeptical before and even more so after water was poured on her head she had fun with the big crowd in the church.
For now we are separated as Markus is back in Vienna working still this week while Julia, Jakob and Kerstin are already enjoying Easter holidays in Vorarlberg. Excitement and fun is guaranteed and the hope for sunshine, warmer temperatures and green grass in the backyard is still intact.
For us it was for the fist time a completely new experience as we not only had christmas to look forward to, but also the first birthday of our daughter Julia. But first things first.

When winter arrived in Western Austria 8 days before Christmas we were very excited about white christmas and could not wait until we finally could hit the road to driver to Vorarlberg. By the time we finally got to set off, on Friday December 21st, warm weather has set in and all the snow that was there - and apparently there was a LOT - was gone. It even got worse as temperatures rose continuously and it rather felt like eastern than Christmas with temperatures peaking at 31 degrees in the sun on the 25th of December! We however did not throw in the towel but had a tons of food as always (including an 8 1/4 kg Turkey on December 26th and just great time. The Christkind was also extremely supportive and had lots of presents for the three juniors, Julia, Ylvie and Jakob. It even followed us from the Burgenland to late-deliver a few presents overnight from 24th to 25th.

Only one of the many presents

On December 28th it was them Julia's big day and she seemed to enjoy it big-big-time. Not only did she behave as if fully aware that it was her day, but she also ate cake and all the other good things she never was allowed to have before, as if she has eaten nothing else beforehand. Our extended festive season continued a few days later following a little bit of sportive activity as Markus did participate in

the Silvesterlauf in Altach on Sunday 30th - his first run in quite a while. Great weather and perfect support by Heidi, Sandra, Ylvie & Flo as well as Kerstin, Julia and Jakob - the big boy even accompanied dad over the finishing line - made the event a big fun and success. New Years Even might not have been the most exciting thing one can imagine, as we had raclette at home, but the night passed by so fast, that midnight almost passed by unnoticed. We did not miss it i the end and Markus did celebrate it with some fireworks on the meadow in front of our Heidi's house. Next day in the morning another party was on the agenda: Ylvie-Marie turned 2 years old and we all have been there. The brunch ended for us around 1700 and we wnt home one person short as our son decided to spend the night with his cousin and godmother. His first night away from mom & dad. We did expect a call from Sandra anytime asking us to pick Jakob up again, but this call came only next day morning. It was a strange feeling.

Frosty came for a visit

When back in Vienna also we finally saw some winter with snowfall and low temperatures. Jakob was glad for several reasons as we finally could hit the slopes again after a 10 months break on the Semmering together with grandpa Kurt. Jakob was still a bit rusty, but the winter only has started. By the end of last week Vienna was all covered in snow as ca 40cm of snow fell inner city. Due to Jakob having some fever an not being completely fit we had to skip skiing this weekend, but managed to do some bobsliding and snowman building on Sunday. And later this week we will head west again as Markus goes skiing to Lech with friends and clients while Kerstin and the kids spend time again with family.

It has been a looong time and probably you all considered us to have given up on updating you. Well. Not entirely. Somehow too many things have happened and that fact paired with lack of time to put it on the webpage led to an even bigger backlog of information. About time to break that vicious circle. Here in a few sentences, what has happened since our summer holiday in August: Jakob developed his biking skills further has been accompanying Markus and Kerstin on their runs in the Prater while Julia also started to fancy mobility, started crawling in October and made her first steps in the second half of November. She now is running around the whole flat. We also returned to Vorarlberg twice: Once by plane in September for the wedding of Barbara and Alex and late October for what was supposed to be our honeymoon. We planned to leave the kids with grandma Heidi and the big family while spending 4 days in New York. Unfortunately Sandy came in between and so our flights were cancelled and we stayed in Europe instead. Next attempt in summer 2013.

With that rough picture of the past 4 months, here is to the present: The whole family is very excited about Christmas which we will after last year’s “break” spend again in Vorarlberg. Jakob is seeing St Nikolaus almost everywhere (in the kindergarden, at the bus stop and at night in various books), yet he is still due to write his letter to the Christkind. He better hurries up, otherwise he might get something he does not like. At the same time anything to do with Knights, airplanes, cars or skiing should be highly welcome. The big boy is also taking utmost care of his little sister, sometimes cuddles her wildly and most of the times really enjoys playing with her. Julia not only loves to empty stuff (be it the laundry, any kind of boxes or “her” cupboard in our kitchen with the plastic containers), but she also loves to play with Jakob and his toys .Last night they cooked in their kitchen and served us a delicious soup, Julia also likes to “clean” the workbench or play with Jakob’s cars and car parkpark. The latter is a sensitive issue however as “hurricane” Julia, as we call her, likes to dismantle the garage and destroy the traffic jam Jakob likes to produce. That sometimes ends in tears for the big boy, but at the end of the day, they do cooperate and fights are very rare.
was a busy day for Markus and Jakob as they had to fillup Heidi’s backyard with
a sand pit which Markus assembled as well as a large inflatable swimming pool
so Jakob has an opportunity to jump around. By the afternoon everything was done
and while the water was still too cold the first sandcastle was built instead.
The coming days were dominated by swimming, jumping and digging in warm summer
weather. Tuesday and Wednesday night Markus and Jakob spent the night in the
tent Markus got as present for his 30th birthday. As if his friends had
known, the tent was a real family tent which used almost every remaining space
in Heidi’s backyard. Jakob liked it so much that he was really disappointed
when due to the forecast of rain Markus dismantled the tent Thursday afternoon.

and found an ideal bike not only by “technology” but also by colour as it is
green, Jakob’s favourite colour. The rest of the day he was either found in
the pool or on his bike practicing and being very proud of his new vehicle. Not
surprisingly he made big progress on day 1 and dropped dead into bed in the
evening. More biking will be on the agenda, no matter what the weather is going

Last week Wednesday Markus's sister Ines has had her 30th
birthday and we celebrated the day all together in our flat. Given the warm
weather we decided to spend the day on teh terrace where a small pool offered
kids and adults the possibility to refress and cool down. in the later
afternoon we then had delicious barbecue before the birthday child made her way
home again where an evening out with her friends was on the agenda.

On Friday afternoon Jakob had his first kindergarden summer
party in the nearby Prater and the small kids had prepared songs and dance
performances over the past weeks. Jakob was all shy in front of the many
parents and friends attending and it took a while for him to "warm
up" which surprised us given the summer temperatures were felt even
underneath the protecting treet of the Prater. Our little butterfly did have
fun however and when we returned home and jumped again into the pool the fun
was even greater.

Over the weekend the summer has taken an even tighter grip
of Vienna and the Eastern part of Austria with temperatures peaking at almost
38 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday. The four of us spent most of the Saturday at home and only hit the
Stadionbad in the later afternoon. Given the fact that both Jakob and Julia had
a long sleep after midday a good decision, yet the heat was still close to
unbearable when we got to the super-packed Stadionbad. Thanks to our season pass we did not have to
queue at the entrance, but still the pools were massively overcrowded and the
spots in the shade were also very scarce. Jakob did not mind as he was cooling
himself off in the water, but our little one was just hot and uneasy.
We therefore decided that on Sunday Kerstin would stay home
with Julia and Markus would hit the Stadionbad early morning already together
with Jakob. This plan was a good one as Julia had much mroe fun in an
airconditioned home and "jumping" into our pool a few times, and the
boys had fun on the waterslide and the cool wet in a crowded but not
overcrowded outdoorpool. The afternoon they spent almost exclusively inside our
little pool on the roof in the shadow, the probably best place to hang out in
such weather. Given the heat will stay for the whole week Markus has overnight
cleaned the pool and refilled it with fresh water so the the fun can continue.
He himslef knows what he will do right after work Monday evening.

When Kerstin's mom, sister and niece Ylvie arrived in Vienna Wednesday night we all were looking forward to some great time together during whih especially the kids could have a lot o fun. Both during the holiday on Thursday as well as Friday, when we kept Jakob at home from kindergarden that was th case and we spent a lot of time outside. With the weekend approaching however the troubles started as Friday night Ylvie got sick several times during the night and was far away from being a happy bunny all day Saturday. Saturday evening, right after Chelsea destroyed Bayern Munich's dreams to win the Champions League, Sandra went down the same route a her daughter and we all knew, that we would have a problem.

It was only a question of time when als the rest of us would be caught by the virus which kept Sandra all might busy and forced her into bed almost all day Sunday. By the time Heidi left with her taxi (Renate and Werner picked her up) in the later afternoon Sandra was back on her deet again and mo other casualties had to be mourne for. But come nighttime the horror continued when Kerstin got sick as well, followed by Jakob waking up, being very uneasy about his mum not feeling well a starting to cry which lead to also Julia waking up screaming and Sandra and Ylvie also being wide awake again. It sid nit tke very long that also Jakob had to vomit and the chaos was absolutely perfect and so we called in Kerstin's cousin Anja to help us handling the kids and being there in case we had to go to hospital with our youngest one. Several time being sick and few hours of sleep later on monday morning Markus decided to stay home and take care of the sickos who by then felt already much better. The recovery during the day was really good - especially with Jakob - and in reality we were all waiting for when also Markus and Julia would catch the virus.

It seems as if the two would have been either simply resistant to the virus o lucky as Julia was all fine Tuesday morning when Markus left the house very early to flee and fly to Frankfurt and then on to London in the afternoon. What he came across there suprised him a lot. Not saw he hot (28 degrees) and sunny weather unlike the past months when it was cold and rainy, but he also saw the frontpage of the Evening Standard:

Two shocking news on one front page. Brangelina don't have time to get officially married? How can that be explained? Lots of explanation one can get for the big headline and so the shocking part is rather that falling house prices in London only now make it to the headlines. The UK is officially in recession and London is probably the biggest real estate bubble in the country. In any case its very doubtful that the two frontpage topic are relate in any way.
The temperatures climbed towards and above30 degrees during the day, there were hardly any clouds on the sky and also during the night temperatures did not drop below 16 degrees. The only things that are missing in Vienna are the sea and a sandy beach. Markus was lucky as he has decided a while ago to take Monday off work so we can have a long weekend and thus the four of us could enjoy the early summer. While outdoor pools were still closed - they opened only yesterday and thus missed a break start into the season - we spent Saturday morning at Biohof Adamah north of Vienna and visited family Strutz in the afternoon. Jakob and Anna had fun in the backyard, Julia and Emil had fun inside and all of us had a great barbecue season opener for dinner. On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday we spent most of the time on our terrace and our big garden, the Prater in shorts, skirts, flip-flops and tank-tops. What can be more relaxing?

Is it obvious, we enjoy that weather?

Our youngest one has enjoyed the heat in her very own way: Each day Julia was freed of her diaper for a long while and she used her temporary freedom to practice her turning skills - she is almost there to spin herself from the back to her belly - and to move around on the floor. Besides moving around and making her funny sounds she every so often also pees on the blanket we place her on. Julia also is by now very eager to listen to the people around her which was most obvious when grandma Eva and grandpa Kurt visited us yesterday and she almost lip-read what everyone was talking. Somehow she has grown up a lot in the past week. After all she turned 4 months on Saturday.
the last update though quite a lot has happened ever since. Jakob was skiing
together with Markus twice being both pulled up the slope with the stick as
well as going up the lift several times, Julia is prospering perfectly and at
the same time sleeping literally like a baby at night. It’s almost regular now
that she is falling asleep around 2030/2100 and sleeping until 0300 or even
0400 without a break. This is in sharp contrast to how Jakob was doing at that age
and makes our life much less tough than we thought.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The two siblings in general love
each other two pieces. While Jakob shows is love for his sister by kissing her
as often as possible (sometimes a bit too energetic than it should be) Julia is
showing her love differently - rather by smiling and taking almost everything
Jakob does with grace and dignity - be it in bed in the morning, be it in the
bathtub or be it on the sofa when held by big brother.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #999999; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;">Aren't we cute?

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Speaking of big brother – Jakob has
grown up even more in the past 2 weeks. Having been very resistant to any talk
about getting rid of the diaper and using then potty of toilet since Christmas
all out of a sudden Jakob asked for underpants instead of diapers during the
day 2 weeks ago. For the first few days that meant a lot of wet pants and
extra-hours for our washing machine and us being almost paranoid asking our
older one every 10 minutes whether he had to go to the toilet. Eventually it
got better. When he demanded 1,5 weeks ago to go to bed without a diaper we
were relaxed and agreed to his demand, yet we were pretty sure we'd need to get
up at night changing the bed linen. Well - always expect the unexpected. We
woke up the next day in the morning with Jakob in between us but wearing the
same dry pyjamas he was wearing the evening before. As since that night he only
had one overnight "accident", is by now getting up from sleep to go
to the toilet and also calling during the day when he has to take a pee or poop
we are happy to announce: Jakob got clean. That one definitely went faster and
smoother than we thought and quite obviously, we are very proud of our big boy!
Throughout January the region has received a lot of snow and when Markus drove up the Flexenpass road he was pretty impressed by the walls of snow left and right. The sheer amount of snow were however most obvious near the avalanche protection which to a certain extent have been covered in snow completely – and these steel constructions are between 5 and 6m high! As the main activity for the long weekend was anyway off-piste skiing the conditions were almost perfect. Snow-wise they definitely have been, the only covenant was overcast sky and not ideal visibility at times. The fearless group of people however was not backing off from exploring off-piste.

Led by veteran ski guide Harry, who has been taking care of the group for years now, the group spent hours out in the powder and they did not shy away from walking through the snow for 20 minutes, climbing up with skis on their shoulder or entering the helicopter in order to find untouched snow. The rewards, fantastic rides through deep powder, were much more convincing than the exertion and fatigue from the long nights that were also part of the programme. Markus,. Not having done any sports since mid-November felt pretty dead after the first day of skiing (it might have also had to do with the fact that he was skiing on his own on Wednesday and did not take any breaks) got stronger every day and did “survive the weekend just like all the others without injuries. Sore muscles could not be prevented, but the memories of fantastic skiing outweighed the pain big time
Not that we were at all surprised, but our car was filled up to the roof and even the new roof-box Markus collected on the weekend was completely packed. Julia was feeling comfortable on the front seat while Jakob and Kerstin were in the back next to some bags and our jackets. With traffic reasonable we made quite good progress and only stopped once shortly as Julia was feeling hungry. Jakob was super patient while his sister was fed and soon after we continued our journey both kids fell fast asleep and allowed us to continue our journey without any further stops resulting in us reaching our destination just after midnight.
Happy Birthday Renate!

While Markus headed towards the mountain the next morning the others had quite some work to do: the final preparations for Kerstin's godmother Renate's 60th birthday on Thursday were due: Bakery Blaser was working all Wednesday preparing several cakes for the upcoming party, Flo had to finish and place the large billboard with Renate’s picture on her balcony and Jakob was working hard learning the text for his song. Thursday afternoon the party kicked off with family as well as neighbors, colleagues and friends invited and thus Meier’s home was packed. Anja and Katrin have prepared a crossword which Renate had to fill in and which granted her small presents with every correct line and with the main price having been a guided tour on a glacier in Tyrol. In order to qualify for that present she had to undergo a 6 x 60 seconds fitness test for a 60 year old. Having passed this test as well she got the bonus of two nights in a hotel in Tyrol before and/or after the glacier tour. Afterwards Jakob had his big appearance by singing “Happy Birthday Mamagota” together with all the guests. As our junior is singing the song permanently anyway it was an easy thing for him and he only had to take care of addressing it to the right person. Jakob enjoyed staying up much longer than usually and was yet again very fond of the older children that were at the party. Given he was behaving so well and not showing any sign of tiredness he stayed up as long as 2300 when however he fell asleep very fast joining Julia in the land of the dreams until late next day in the morning.
Ever since he went to the kindergarten we started asking our junior whether he needed or wanted to go tho the loo or not without applying to much pressure. During the day, also enhanced by low riding, childfriendly toilet seats he (apparently) sometimes uses the toilet but at home Jakob was rather hesitant. Before christmas and also under the Christmas tree he got several books on the topic, but while he loved to look at them and likes it to have the stories read to him it seemed as if they had absolutely zero effect on our sunshine.

The past few days however there was some development visible: Jakob regularly asks for underpants rather than diapers and he is trying to pee on both the toilet and the potty several times during the day. Yesterday morning he was half there when he spent a while on the toilet and in the end pooped right on his diaper which was sat on the floor - good boy!! ;-). Today in the morning he asked us to put the potty into the ground floor toilet, demanded a book to be brought to him and the door to be shut. We followed his demand and there he was: sat on the potty reading a book and waiting for things to happen just like in one of the books he received for Christmas. After a while we heard a loud yell, were ordered into the toilet and had to applaud our son for filling the potty quite significantly. While we are quite happy about that major step we at the same time were shaking our heads as ideally we don't want Jakob to get used to the potty as we don't really want to stir sh*t every day. But one step after the other.

unwrapped his skis and ski-boots underneath the Christmas tree he immediately
wanted to try the boots on, get onto the skis and “walk” around in our living
room. Back thenwe bought time and told him, that we would go out onto the
meadows of the Prater as soon as there was snow . Given the spring-like winter
in Vienna with temperatures far too high for December and also January and as
a consequence no snow at all in the capital we still haven’t had a chance to do
so. On Saturday morning Markus had to travel to his parents anyway and he
decided to take Jakob along and on the way home stop by in Moenichkirchen, a small village with
a few lifts on the Wechsel not far from where his parents live to establish the
first contact between Jakob on skis and the snow.

After a
good snack and some playing with grandma, grandpa, Stefan and Viki the two boys
headed towards the hill and Jakob used the 20 minute drive for his lunchtime
nap. Once they arrived he was immediately switched on and ready to get into
gear. In order to be able to show Jakob what to do Markus decided to also put
in his full gear (including his helmet) and like that they set of for the
children’s fun park. The few metres from the car to the slope were probably the
biggest obstacle as walking in skiboots on heaps of snow is even more
exhausting than walking in a shop or at home. Eventually they reached their
final destination and Jakob was all excited. He however also realised that it's
slightly different to walk on skis on a carpet at home or on snow and probably
that was the reason why he very soon wanted to walk on the rubbermats slightly
uphill in order to ski down. Markus had a deja-vu as also when it came to
walking Jakob always wanted to jump one or even two steps ahead.

It has yet again
been confirmed that the big boy is a real fighter and thus he made it all work:
putting his hand on his knees to get into the right body position and with a
little help from his dad his skied down a few metres in order to walk right
back up to the top. After several repetitions he started to talk about the next
level as he wanted to get on the moving belt which carried the children a bit
further up the hill and at one point Markus gave in. Jakob neither struggled to
get on or off the moving belt nor did he have issues on the way down. He could
not care less about making any turns or attempting to stop, but enjoyed the
“speed” and was all laughing when Markus was to slow to stop him in front of
the nets at the bottom. He simply asked for help to get up again and walked
straight back to the lift. After approximate 50 minutes on skis he decided just
after getting off the lift on the top that is was enough. Markus could convince
Jakob to ski down to the bottom one last time but had no plan to argue for more
skiing for several reasons: Firstly, there would be no point anyway. Secondly
Jakob was skiing already much longer than Markus could imagine. And lastly
Markus was completely drenched and exhausted himself.

With both Julia and Kerstin returning home from hospital only a few hours after giving birth everything at home was focused on the newcomer. Jakob has grown up big time during the past weeks and welcomed his sister just like a big brother does - full of love and care - grandma Heidi helped us handling both Julia and Jakob as well as our lives and Markus tried to as well to relieve Kerstin from any work apart from feeding and took care of lots of admin stuff as well. All that sounds absolutely normal when a family is growing and it was very similar when Jakob was born 2,5 years ago.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">After our first visit to the paediatrician on the 30th and a visit from Markus' parents & sister on the 31st however it got really obvious that this year is different. While seemingly the whole world was preparing for a big party for the year end our evening was just like any other evening - playing, having dinner, getting ready for bed. There was not much feeling and excitement about the changeover from 2011 to 2012 and it was the first time since being a child that both Kerstin and Markus were in bed when the fireworks outdoors welcomed the New Year. The good thing however was that both Julia and Jakob had a very peaceful sleep and not only were not disturbed by the noise of the fireworks but also slept long and thus we all had a lie-in on January 1st.
After first examinations by the pediatritian we are soon setting off home in order to meet Jakob and grandma Heidi who are waiting at home and are very keen to meet the young one already.
Shortly after entering the delivery room at the Ignaz Semmelweisklinik in Vienna and after around three hours of labor our beatiful daughter Julia has been born at 11:17. Given she stayed six extra days in her mobile home she had plenty of time to arrive absolutely ripe and well developed. With her size of 53 cm she is as large as her brother but with both her weight of 3760 g and the amount of hair she outpaces her brother Jakob already.
It was however not only due to the premiere of celebrating Christmas in Vienna a very different feeling this year round, but also due to the fact that we did not really know whether we can follow our master plan for the day or need to quickly re-adjust everything in case our daughter decided to join us. With her calculated due date of December 22nd it really could kick off any day and thus planning was very tricky and when Markus' sister turned sick the night before Christmas Eve the whole situation did not really get any less complicated. As a consequence it was only his parents who arrived in Vienna late morning. After lunch they went for a long walk with Jakob who after awhile fell asleep and slept peacefully in his push chair providing Markus and Kerstin with plenty of time to finish the last preparations. When they came back home our sunshine was (not surprisingly after a long sleep) in very good form and we had coffee, cocoa and cookies in Jakob's room, played a lot got Jakob into festive outfit and waited for the ominous pinging of a little bell.

The last time Jakob saw the tree it was only a green tree...

By the time the dusk set in we suddenly could hear that special sound and all out of a sudden Jakob was very anxious and nervous about what would happen now. Slowly we made our way upstairs and four ourself in front of a beautifully decorated and illuminated christmas tree. Jakob's eyes were all shining and he was truly impressed by what he saw and it took a fews minutes until he dared touching any of the presents underneath the tree. What followed was a very uncommon behavior for a child as Jakob started to pick up the presents from one side of the tree and made his way present by present to the other side. While he claimed each present for himself - pretending he can perfectly well read already - he accepted our objections when it was not the case but helped the respective person unpacking. Once Jakob has unwrapped one of his presents he took his time examining and watching (like the books or hard hat & safety goggles he received), trying (like the ski boots or his skis) or playing with them (like the puzzle he received) and as a consequence the whole procedure took about 1 hour. Only at the very end our junior tackled the largest present which also unraveled the mystery of the hard hat, ear protector and safety glasses - a Bosch mini Work station perfectly fitting the tool box he already has. Tim Taylor and "Tool time" is on now in our flat every day and no more screw is safe.

As Markus parent's had to go back home right after dinner due to Ines being sick we agreed with Kerstin's mom to travel to Vienna early and so she arrived i the late afternoon on Christmas Day in order to be available to look after Jakob when things are getting serious. So far our princess however is taking her time and seems not to be willing to join us. While Jakob was born on the 5th day after the due date there are no such signs for the second one yet. We are still waiting.

us for several reasons. Firstly, it’s the first time Jakob is undergoing the
lead time to Christmas (almost) fully aware of the meaning of it as both in the
kindergarten as well as at home he is learning why we are celebrating this
special time and he also made the first acquaintance with the Nikolaus last
week Tuesday. On the past weekend the three of us tackled the project "Christmas
cookies" with Jakob both rolling out the dough as well as cutting out the
shapes. Not surprisingly his endurance is still rather limited and thus we
focussed on cutting and baking the gingerbread cookies as well as preparing the
short crust on Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning Anja joined us to bake the short
crust cookies and Jakob was all happy to play around with dough, flour, his
rolling pin and the cookie cutters and even more glad he was about
"tasting" the dough before reaching the oven as well as the finished
cookies as soon as they came out of the oven and have cooled off a bit
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">As this Christmas we are not only awaiting the arrival of the birth of Jesus
the advent time is lived by us in real. Any day our daughter could join us,
whereas currently everything is calm still. Obviously we are a little bit
nervous and also curious as to whether she is going to be born on the estimated
date (December 22nd) or whether she will be a real "christkind" born
on December 24th. In any case - we are ready and prepared - on the weekend the
boys finished the last necessary bit and assembled - and whenever she is ready
she can come. Let’s see when that is going to be the case - we are looking
forward to her.

On Friday late afternoon Jakob had his first big event at the
kindergarten – the annual lantern festival marking the celebrations of StMartin’s Day. Following the tinkering of the lantern a few weeks ago the three
of us made our way towards a park nearby our son’s kindergarten together with
the lantern at dusk. We arrived shortly before 1630, had the candle in the lantern
lit by one of Jakob’s educationists and soon after we strolled through the park
altogether. The older children were singing the classical songs “Laterne,
Laterne, Sonne, Mond und Sterne” and “Ich geh mit meiner Laterne”
while the Rookies like our sunshine were rather just walking along and looking
around what was going on there. It must have been even more funny to watch from
outside than it was for us being part of the ceremony.

This is serious stuff!!

After a round in the park the oldest group of children performed
a play in English language telling the story of Holy Martin who was a soldier
and helped out an old homeless man with half his coat on a cold and snowy
night. The children did an excellent job as it is already a challenge at that
age to perform a play in generally, but even more so in English (especially as
none of them is an English native speaker). The play was followed with one more
song before the warm tea, croissant and open sandwiches were served. On our way
home Jakob insisted on having the candle lit all the way long and thus Markus
had to lighten-up the candle over and over again. That evening Jakob also could
only fall asleep with the lantern, sitting on the window board, lit.
Serik, Fritz & Jade's son, has picked the offices of the <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Astria Kids Academy<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> as location for his party with 15 of his friends. As usually Jakob was rather shy and quiet in the beginning and it took him a while before he joined into the musical programme the team of the kids academy has prepared. But once the hand puppets have disappeared - our sunshine is not very much into anything that is in disguise - and real instruments as well as balls came into play Jakob was all fired up and enthusiastic and danced, played piano and jumped around.

<span style="color: #999999; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;"> Jakob and music go along well

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Later on a few parent s performed a little play and we were prepared already to leave the room with our junior as all the characters were disguised. Some more. Some less. Interestingly Jakob was all fine to stay, even when the terrible, terrible <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Gruffalo<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> - Fritz portrayed him almost perfectly - appeared. Most likely the fact that the Gruffalo was afraid of the "mighty" mouse took away a lot of its scare.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #999999; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;">Jakob was respectful, but not scared of Gruffalo

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">After the performance it was time for pizza and cake and Jakob obviously was all excited about that, taking the seat right next to Serik and sharing a piece of cake with mom and two slices of pizza with dad before playing with the other children (aged between 2 and 6 years) on the slide, improving further his piano skills and collecting the sweets and mars bars that were raining over the children (alongside lots of confetti) from paper buckets as grande finale for the party.

<span style="color: #999999; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;">Finally - Food also for the children!

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">When we reached home at 1800 Viki and Stefan as well as Marina and Fabio were already waiting for us and they joined us for cold dinner and gave Jakob the opportunity to continue playing with a friend in a however more calm way than at the birthday party and thus conclude a very nice and exciting Sunday.
